AUSTIN, Texas –
Madi Maxwell posted a new career-high with 19 points, but the Concordia Texas women's basketball team fell short to Hardin-Simmons 73-49 in their home opener on Thursday.
Madi Maxwell shot 7-of-15 from the field on her way to 19 points, and
Falyn Taylor recorded a near double-double with eight points and 10 rebounds in her first career start for the Tornados.
The Cowgirls opened the game on a 7-2 run, but the Tornados climbed back into the game and a three-pointer from Maxwell gave them a 13-11 lead with 3:08 left to play in the quarter. However, HSU outscored the Tornados 12-2 to end the quarter, giving them a 23-15 lead heading into the second period.
CTX struggled in the second quarter, being outscored 22-12 despite eight points from Maxwell in the period. Concordia Texas trailed 27-45 heading into the locker room a halftime.
The Tornados held Hardin-Simmons to only 12 points in the third quarter, but still were not able to close the gap.
Allie Garza converted an and-one opportunity and picked up an assist in the period, but the CTX still trailed 38-57 heading into the final quarter of play.
Concordia Texas fought hard in the fourth quarter, winning the rebound battle 10-5 and shooting 4-for-10 from the floor, but ultimately the deficit was too much to overcome and they fell 49-73.
Wendel'Lyn Moblin and Taylor set career highs in rebounds with eight and 10, respectively.
The Tornados will look to bounce back with another game at home against McMurry on Saturday at 1 p.m.
