AUSTIN, Texas – Three players scored in double figures, led by
Luis Gonzalez's 16 points, but it was not enough as the Concordia Texas men's basketball team came up short against McMurry on Saturday, falling 80-77.
Gonzalez, playing in his first game since the team's season opener, shot 6-of-11 from the field and scored 12 of his 16 points in the second half, but a late War Hawks 6-0 run to close out the game led to the Tornados' demise.
In the first half, the game was a back-and-forth affair, witnessing five lead changes and four ties. Seven different players recorded a point for CTX in the half, led by
Grant Goosby and
Tige Johnson, who each scored eight points.
The Tornados trailed by as much as five, but finished out the period strong, closing with a 10-5 run and headed to the locker room with a slim 36-35 lead after Johnson got his layup to go before the buzzer.
In the second half, neither team grew a lead larger than four points. Concordia Texas trailed 62-58 midway through the half, but reeled off six straight points after back-to-back buckets from Johnson followed by a pair of free throws from
Zaid Harris.
The Tornados as a team were nearly perfect at the line, finishing 17-of-20 on the day.
Late in the game,
Alexander Estrada, who was the team's second-leading scorer for the game with 14 points, knocked down his 3-pointer to give CTX a 75-71 edge with 3:16 to go.
McMurry would not go away though as they scored nine of the next 11 points and retook the lead 80-77 with under 20 seconds to play. On the ensuing possession, the Tornados had a chance to tie, but
Spencer Bone's shot was off the mark as the clock hit zero.
Antoine Henderson nearly had a double-double on the day, producing 14 points and a team-high rebounds in the loss, while Johnson finished with 12 points off the bench.
Concordia Texas will look to snap its losing streak on the road when they travel to Brownwood, Texas for a matchup against Howard Payne on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
