RICHARDSON, Texas – Madi Maxwell and Natalie Velardez both put forth strong offensive performances, with 17 points and 10 points respectively, but the Concordia Texas women's basketball team fell short to UT Dallas 62-58 on Saturday at the UTD Activity Center.
 
Maxwell shot 8-of-16 from the field for a team-high 17 points, and Velardez came alive after the halfway mark, scoring eight of her 10 points in the second half.
 
The Tornados opened the game on a 10-4 run, led by Maxwell, who scored six points during the run. Concordia Texas shot 9-for-15 in the quarter and led 20-12 after one.
 
The Comets climbed back into the game in the second period, outscoring CTX 14-8. Allie Garza knocked down two free throws late in the quarter to preserve the Tornados' lead, and Concordia took a 28-26 lead into halftime.
 
CTX started the second half trading baskets with UTD, with Maxwell and Velardez combining for 11 points. Velardez hit three big free throws to close out the period, and the teams went into the fourth quarter all tied up.
 
Concordia Texas started the final period on a quick 5-0 run, led by a big three-point shot from Jessica Amezaga. The Comets, however, began to find their footing offensively after that run. The Tornados ended up on the wrong end of a high-scoring fourth quarter, ultimately falling 62-58.
 
Wendel'lyn Moblin played well defensively, finishing with five blocks and a steal, while Garza posted seven points to go along with three assists.
 
Concordia Texas will look to bounce back against Belhaven in their home opener next Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
