Molina, Vazquez lead Tornados past Hardin-Simmons

ROUND ROCK, Texas – Melvin Molina made program history, Marco Vazquez had another two-goal showing and the Concordia Texas men's soccer team pushed their win streak to five in a row with a convincing 3-1 victory over Hardin-Simmons on Thursday.

The Tornados continued their final homestand of the season, after defeating Belhaven last Thursday, welcoming the Cowboys into town for a pivotal conference matchup.

Concordia Texas scored three second-half goals and held off a late comeback by HSU to pick up their fifth straight win and extend their unbeaten streak to eight games, two away from tying the program record set back in 2019.

Vazquez continued his impressive scoring streak as of late, notching another two-goal performance on the season.

It is his fourth straight game with at least two goals scored in a single game. He now has 23 goals scored in his career, two away from tying the program's all-time goal scoring record held by Omar Aguirre.

Meanwhile, Molina assisted on the game's first goal of the night, giving him nine assists on the year and breaking the school's single-season assists record, previously set by Joel Abrego back in 2018.

After a quiet first half between the two teams that resulted in a 0-0 tie heading into halftime, Xavier Polk did not wait long to give the Tornados the early edge in the second period.

In the 50th minute, off a pass from Antonio Rios, Molina sent a high cross into the left side of the box and found Polk, who sent his header into the back of the net for his fourth goal of the year and gave CTX a 1-0 lead.

Vazquez doubled the Tornados' lead in the 72nd minute, doing it all on his own and firing a curler into the top right corner of the net to make it 2-0.

Hardin-Simmons was quick to respond though, cutting the lead in half with a goal in the 79th minute.

The goal ends CTX's school record shutout streak at 609:35 minutes dating back to their match against East Texas Baptist on Sept. 25.

Vazquez put the game away for the Tornados in the 81st minute, heading in Adrian Guerrero's cross to secure the 3-1 victory and remain second in the conference standings.

Up next, the Tornados will look to make it six wins in a row as they host McMurry on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at the Round Rock Multipurpose Complex in Round Rock, Texas. Prior to the game, the program will celebrate its three seniors, Victor Gomez, Zack Kusak and Adrian Guerrero.
