Tornados' win streak halted against Howard Payne

BROWNWOOD, Texas – Emily Mowrer scored an equalizing goal in the 84th minute but it was not enough as the Concordia Texas women's soccer team's five-game win streak came to an end, falling to Howard Payne 2-1 in a heartbreaker on Thursday.

The Tornados entered the matchup against the Yellow Jackets undefeated in conference play and having won their last five matches. Concordia Texas pressed offensively throughout the day, recording nine corner kicks, but only found the back of the net once.

In the first half, the Tornados fell behind early as HPU netted the game's opening goal in the 15th minute to make it 1-0.

Concordia Texas tallied only two shots in the half, including one by Emma Visser in the 36th minute that was saved by the Yellow Jackets' Delaney Castor, and headed to the locker room trailing.

In the second half, the Tornados racked up seven shots, searching for an equalizer.

Mowrer leveled the game at 1-all in the 84th minute, firing in her third goal of the season. Jenna Townsley nearly put CTX on top minutes later with a shot on-goal, but Castor was there for the save.

In the 88th minute, the Yellow Jackets retook the lead after curling a corner kick into the back of the net.

The Tornados made a last minute effort, earning a corner kick with time winding down, but were unable to extend the game, falling 2-1 to HPU.

The defeat ends CTX's win streak at five, their longest win streak since 2011.

The Tornados will look to begin a new win streak on Saturday, traveling to Alpine, Texas to take on Sul Ross State at 11:30 a.m.
