ALPINE, Texas –
Marco Vazquez knocked in a pair of goals, including the game-winning goal in the 30th minute, lifting the Concordia Texas men's soccer team to a convincing 3-0 road victory over Sul Ross State on Saturday.
Vazquez notched his fourth and fifth goal of the year, moving into lead on the team, when he found the back net off a
Melvin Molina assist and broke the scoreless tie. Vazquez's score gave CTX a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute, and the Tornados never looked back, ultimately running to a 3-0 win over the Lobos.
The match began at a slow pace, neither team taking a shot for the first 20 minutes, but the Tornados made their first shot count as Vazquez netted the game-winner, giving Concordia Texas the advantage after 30 minutes of play.
The next CTX goal came by way of penalty kick, as Vazquez took advantage of the opportunity for his second goal of the afternoon, giving the Tornados a 2-0 lead just before the end of the half.
Concordia Texas entered halftime with a two-goal advantage, allowing only two SRSU shots in the first 45 minutes.
Christian Barillas began the second half with a bang, firing a goal in the opening minute and extending the CTX lead to 3-0.
The Tornados fired four more shots, one of which Barillas registered on-goal, and held steady defensively, preserving the shutout and ending regulation with a 3-0 victory.
With its fourth straight shutout completed, CTX set a school record for the longest shutout streak having not allowed a goal in the last 440:35 minutes of play. It breaks the previous shutout streak record of 404:17 set back in 2009.
Meanwhile, the Tornados extended their winning streak to three matches and their unbeaten streak to six matches.
Joshua Redding has played in the goal for each of these shutouts, adding four saves in this match to bring his season total to 32.
