ROUND ROCK, Texas – In the closing seconds of the first half,
Marissa Funk knocked in the game-winning goal, lifting the Concordia Texas women's soccer team to a 2-0 win over East Texas Baptist in the American Southwest Conference Tournament quarterfinals on Tuesday.
The first of Funk's two goals came just five seconds before time expired in the opening half, knocking in what proved to be the game-winner after an assist from
Kaley Kaspar. Her goal secured the program's first ASC Tournament win in 10 years, the last coming in 2011 when Concordia Texas topped East Texas Baptist 2-0, the same result of today's match.
In the first half,
Emily Mowrer fired a pair of early shots, including one on-goal in the second minute of the match, and
Marley Hennig struck a shot on-goal in the 27th minute, requiring a save from the ETBU keeper to hold the score at 0-0.
The Tigers fired 11 shots in the first half, but
Lora Tresco held firm in the goal, recording four saves and keeping ETBU off the scoreboard in the first half. After Funk's goal in the 45th minute, the Tornados took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
In the 56th minute, Funk recorded her second goal of the match, bringing her total to six on the season. She found the back net after an assist from
Emily Mowrer, extending the CTX lead to 2-0.
Tresco and the Tornados' back line continued their strong play in the second half, keeping the Tigers off the board for the fourth CTX shutout of the year and ultimately winning 2-0 after a full 90 minutes. Tresco turned in an impressive performance in the goal, coming away with eight saves and no goals allowed.
Next, the Tornados will continue their postseason run, moving on to the ASC semifinals to face off with the No. 2 seed Mary Hardin-Baylor in Abilene, Texas on Friday.
