SEGUIN, Texas –
Luis Gonzalez went 12-of-14 from the free-throw line on the way to a 22-point performance to lead the Concordia Texas men's basketball team to their third straight win with a 83-73 victory over Texas Lutheran on Monday.
The Tornados, who were coming off a home-opening win against Schreiner on Saturday, continued their offensive efficiency against the Bulldogs, finishing over 50% from the field for the third game in a row.
Antoine Henderson, who had his first double-double of the season last game, nearly had another one, shooting 6-of-7 from the floor for 15 points and secured nine rebounds as well.
Tige Johnson, meanwhile, was a perfect 4-of-4 from the floor for eight points off the bench.
Concordia Texas also took advantage at the charity stripe, going 27-of-33 from the line, including an 8-of-10 mark by
Cameron Jones, who finished the night with a career-high 13 points.
Defensively, the Tornados held TLU to 32% shooting from the field and forced 18 turnovers, leading to 18 points on the other end of the floor.
Concordia Texas only trailed once throughout the whole game, falling behind 7-6 after a Bulldogs' layup at the 16:58 mark in the first half. The Tornados responded with a 10-2 run sparked by back-to-back buckets by Henderson and
Alexander Estrada, jumping out to a 16-9 advantage.
Gonzalez scored nine of his 22 points in the first half as CTX shot over 55% from the floor as a team. Johnson's driving layup in the final seconds of the half gave the Tornados a 41-30 lead as the teams headed into the locker room.
In the second half, the Tornados continued to pile it on, building up a 19-point advantage after Gonzalez's free throw made it 52-33 with 15:14 to go.
Texas Lutheran did not go away though, whittling down CTX's lead into single digits late in the game after an Isaac Orozco jumper made it 69-61.
The Bulldogs would pull within six with 1:33 to play before Jones hit 7-of-8 free throws and the Tornados restored their double-digit lead, cruising to an 83-73 victory, their third consecutive win.
Next, CTX will turn their attention to conference play, hosting Ozarks in their American Southwest Conference opener on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. inside Concordia Fieldhouse.
