AUSTIN, Texas –
Luis Gonzalez knocked down four 3-pointers as a part of a team-high 18-point night as the Concordia Texas men's basketball team took down the University of the Ozarks 92-72 in their conference opener on Thursday for their fourth victory in a row.
The Tornados, who defeated Texas Lutheran on Monday on the road, opened conference play against the reigning American Southwest Conference champions in the Eagles.
Concordia Texas continued to be efficient on the offensive end, shooting nearly 52% from the field, including a 39% mark from behind the arc, aided by the production of Gonzalez and
Alexander Estrada, who combined for eight of the team's 12 3-pointers.
In the first half, the Tornados walloped UO from the jump, opening the game on a 21-4 run after
Jaden Ross's driving layup at the 12:39 mark.
The Eagles would slowly cut into CTX's lead though, making it 27-17 after a layup by Dillon Cheater.
The Tornados were quick to respond, reeling off eight straight points, including back-to-back 3-pointers from
Sean Phillips off the bench. Concordia Texas' bench was influential throughout the night, scoring 44 of the team's 92 points.
At halftime, the Tornados headed to the locker room with a 50-35 advantage.
In the second half, three CTX players had double-digit performances in the period alone, including 10 points from
DJ Pigford, who set a career-high in scoring on the night. Meanwhile, Gonzales made three treys in the period, to score 11 of his 18 points.
Ozarks did not go away in the second half though, opening on a 9-3 run to pull within single-digits at 53-44 with 16:42 to go.
Estrada, who had 10 of his season-high 16 points in the second half, knocked down one of his four 3-pointers on the night, pushing the Tornados back to a double-digit lead.
Concordia Texas never looked back, building a 22-point advantage late in the period, and cruised to a 92-72 victory to open conference play.
The Tornados have now won four games in a row and are off to their best start to a season since 2017-18, when they opened the year with a 4-1 record.
Concordia Texas will go for five consecutive wins next Thursday, traveling to Abilene, Texas to take on Hardin-Simmons at 7:30 p.m.
