ABILENE, Texas –
Luis Gonzalez matched his career high with a 27-point performance, but the Concordia Texas men's basketball team came up short, falling to McMurry 96-87 in overtime on Saturday.
Gonzalez recorded his second straight game with 20-plus points, adding nine rebounds for a near double-double as well as four assists.
After a back-and-forth battle throughout the game, the Tornados ended the second half on a 10-4 run to force overtime, but ultimately fell 96-87 after an extra five-minute period.
The Tornados ran to an 8-6 lead at the 15:20 mark of the first half behind a couple of early baskets from Gonzalez, and
Antoine Henderson's second field goal of the game extended the CTX lead to 17-12 with 10:52 left in the half.
Later in the period,
Donovan Stafford hit a jumper in the paint with 4:45 on the clock, giving the Tornados their largest lead of the game at 32-22.
The Warhawks answered with a 12-0 run, taking a 34-32 lead, but last-minute baskets from
Alexander Estrada and
DJ Pigford kept the score even at 36-36 at the halfway point.
McMurry opened the second half on a 12-3 run, taking a 48-39 lead with 17:02 remaining.
The Tornados fell behind, trailing 58-48 at the 10:45 mark, but a three-pointer from Pigford put them back within single-digits at 58-51.
Staying within striking distance for the remainder of the half, the Tornados finally closed the gap as
Antoine Henderson finished at the rim, sparking a 6-0 run capped off by a pair of free throws from
Sunny Ozoh and Gonzales. With 1:39 remaining, the score was even a 75-75.
With 34 seconds remaining, a McMurry jumper saw the Tornados fall behind 77-75, but Stafford answered with a clutch shot, tying the game at 77-77 and forcing overtime.
In overtime, McMurry converted three free throws to take an 80-77 lead, but a jumper from
Alexander Estrada cut the score to 80-79 with 2:59 left to play.
After this, an 8-2 spurt from the Warhawks saw them take an 88-81 lead with 48 seconds remaining, and the Tornados were unable to erase the deficit, ultimately falling 96-87 in overtime.
Henderson ended the day with 14 points and five boards, and Stafford posted 12 points on 6-of-7 shooting and six rebounds, hitting timely shots with stellar play off the bench for the Tornados.
With the loss, CTX falls to 1-2 in ASC play, but they will look forward an opportunity to even their conference record when they return home on Saturday to host UT Dallas for a 3 p.m. tip off.
