ABILENE, Texas –
Luis Gonzalez poured in over 20-plus points for the second time this season, but it was not enough for the Concordia Texas men's basketball team, falling to Hardin-Simmons 99-76 on Thursday.
The Tornados, who had won their previous four games after a conference-opening win over Ozarks last Thursday, forced 25 Cowboys turnovers but could not find their shooting touch, finishing shooting 38% from the floor.
Gonzalez was the go-to playmaker for the Tornados throughout the night, producing a team-high 21 points on 11 shots along with five rebounds and four assists. Meanwhile,
Alexander Estrada and
Jaden Ross each had nine points for the game.
In the first half, HSU jumped out to an early 5-0 lead and built a 10-point advantage by the 16:32 mark.
Concordia Texas battled back though as Estrada knocked down back-to-back jumpers, followed by a Gonzalez layup on the fast break, cutting the deficit to six with 14:12 to go in the half.
It was as close as the Tornados would get in the half, unable to keep the Cowboys out of the paint, and headed into the locker room trailing 57-36.
In the second half, Ross scored seven of his nine points in the period, while Gonzalez scored seven of his nine second-half points at the free-throw line.
Ten different CTX players scored in the period, but were unable to cut the deficit back down to single-digits, falling 99-76 and snapping their four-game win streak.
The Tornados will look to begin a new win streak on Saturday, facing McMurry at 3 p.m. inside Kimbrell Arena in Abilene, Texas.
