AUSTIN, Texas –
Grayson Lee picked up two hits on the game, including a grand slam, leading the Concordia Texas baseball team to an 11-1 win in the series finale against East Texas Baptist on Sunday.
Thomas Houle made the start on the mound for the Tornados, throwing three innings of one-run ball and punching out five ETBU hitters, and
Trey Toney recorded the win thanks to two shutout innings in relief.
The Tornados jumped out to an early lead in the ballgame, pushing a run across in the first inning.
Casen Novak led off CTX's first trip to the plate with a line-drive single, advancing to second on a catcher's inference, and then to third on a passed ball, and an RBI groundout from
Bret Leiferman plated the first run of the game.
East Texas Baptist struck back in the third inning, scoring their only run of the game on an RBI double, and tied the game a 1-1.
Concordia Texas answered in the bottom half of the inning, scoring two runs after a hard-hit ball off the bat of
Corbin Cross, ruled an error, which brought Lee and Owen hill across the plate. The Tornados led 3-1 after three innings of baseball.
The Tornados were right back at it in the fourth, a two-out single and stolen base from Novak sparking a rally that led to a two-RBI double from Leiferman, and CTX extended their lead to 5-1.
After a scoreless frame in the fifth, the Concordia Texas offense exploded for a huge six-run inning. Mason Dubois got things started, working a leadoff walk, and a defensive blunder from the Tigers led to a bases-loaded situation with no outs. Goynes and Hill were both able to work a walk, scratching across the first two runs of the inning, and Lee hit a monster grand slam to put the Tornados ahead 11-1 heading into the seventh.
Otto Franz had a 1-2-3 inning on the hill in the seventh, slamming the door on the Tigers' final chance at the plate, and the Tornados won 11-1 after seven innings due to the 10-run rule.
Leiferman continues to edge closer to multiple Concordia Texas career records, picking up his 41st career two-bagger, putting him one away from the program record held by Tommy Cantrell (1989-92). He is also three total bases away from tying that record as well.
Novak, who came into the day tied for the program's career record for runs scored with Jesse Ayala (1986-89) and his teammate, Leiferman, crossed the plate three times and now holds the record with 157.
The Tornados look ahead to another conference series, playing the first game of the three-game set on the road against LeTourneau on Friday in Longview, Texas at 7 p.m.
