Tornados fall short in season opener

LONGVIEW, Texas – The Concordia Texas men's soccer team tallied six corner kicks, but were unable to find the back of the net, falling to Letourneau 1-0 on Friday in their season opener.

The Tornados recorded eight shots on the night, including of a pair of on-goal strikes from Victor Gomez, but were not able to break through the Yellowjackets' defense.

In the first half, CTX took advantage of an early scoring opportunity, but Chase Camp's shot soared over the bar. Edgar Guerrero nearly put the Tornados on the board in the 17th minute, but his shot went wide right.

Meanwhile, CTX's defense remained stout throughout the half, allowing only one corner kick and four shots. LeTourneau nearly broke the scoreless tie in the 10th minute, but goalkeeper Joshua Redding was there for the save.

At the halfway point, the teams remained in a stalemate at 0-0.

In the second half, the Yellowjackets broke the tie with a goal in the 54th minute.

The Tornados nearly responded with a goal of their own in the 70th minute, but Gomez's shot was saved by LETU goalkeeper CJ Leyva.

Gomez would have another scoring opportunity minutes later, but once again it was saved as CTX was unable to crack the Yellowjackets' defense and fell 1-0.

Next up, the Tornados will remain on the road and face McMurry in their conference opener on Wednesday at 5 p.m. in Abilene, Texas.
