Tornados' first win of the season comes behind two goals from Vazquez

ALPINE, Texas – Marco Vazquez scored two goals, including the game-winner, and the Concordia Texas men's soccer team came away with a win against Sul Ross State 2-1 on Friday.

The Tornados returned to the pitch for the first time in four weeks as a result of weather and COVID protocol cancellations, playing their second match of the season.

Concordia Texas and Sul Ross state battled in a scoreless first half, the Tornados unable to net a score despite a pair of shots on-goal from Nicolas Kopinsky and Joel Abrego. Goalkeeper Joshua Redding picked up a save in the 19th minute, preserving the tie.

In the second half, SRSU struck first, taking a 1-0 lead in the 49th minute, but Vazquez scored the equalizer off an assist from Abrego to tie the match at 1-1 in the 68th minute. In the 79th minute, Vazquez netted the game-winner to give the Tornados the lead, and ultimately CTX earned a 2-1 victory.

Vazquez scored multiple goals for the second time in his career, the las time being against East Texas Baptist on Sept. 26, 2019, and his two scores were the first of the season for the Tornados.

The Tornados have a quick turnaround, hitting the road for a non-conference match against McMurry in Abilene, Texas on Monday at 4 p.m.
