Tornados fall in double OT thriller

ALPINE, Texas – The Concordia Texas women's basketball team, led by a strong offensive showing from Madi Maxwell, fell to Sul Ross State after two overtime periods on Saturday.

Maxwell shot 4-of-8 from behind the arc on her way to 19 points to go along with six rebounds and four steals, and Falyn Taylor posted 10 points on 3-of-7 shooting downtown.

The Tornados controlled the game early, outscoring the Lobos 13-8 in the first quarter. Taylor opened the lid, connecting from deep for the first basket of the game, followed by two buckets in the paint from Zakari Perry and Wendel'Lyn Moblin to gain a 7-4 lead. Concordia Texas entered the second period with a five point advantage.

In the second quarter, CTX exploded early, starting the quarter on a 9-4 run thanks to a three-pointer from Taylor. The Lobos answered with a 10-0 run, tying the game at 22-22, but Allie Garza sunk two free throws to close out the half and give the Tornados a 24-22 lead at the halfway point.

The Tornados struggled from the field in the third quarter, but four points from Havyn Perez and a tenacious defensive effort kept them in the game, trailing 32-33 at the end of the period.

The fourth quarter was a back-and-forth affair, the lead changing hands six times in the period. Maxwell and Jessica Amezaga scored six points each in the quarter, and a clutch jump shot from Perez with 15 seconds left tied things up at 49-49, sending the game into overtime.

The first overtime period started with a three from Taylor, giving the Tornados a 52-51 lead, but the Lobos answered with four straight points to pull ahead 55-52. Ultimately, a free throw from Chelsea Cogborn tied it up once again and sent the game to a second overtime period.

The Tornados were unable to stop an offensive flurry from SRSU in the second overtime period, being outscored by 10 in the final five minutes, and the game ended in a 60-70 defeat for CTX.

Concordia Texas will return home for a matchup against East Texas Baptist, squaring off against the ASC opponent on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in Concordia Fieldhouse.
