AUSTIN, Texas – The Concordia Texas softball team opened their season with a bang, scoring their most runs in a single game since 2009 and completed a doubleheader sweep of Austin College in dominating fashion on Saturday.
The Tornados showed no mercy in their season-opening game, scoring in every inning, including a 10-run third and blew out the Roos by run-rule 21-0. They continued the offensive barrage in the second game of the day, scoring nine unanswered runs to complete the sweep by run-rule 9-1.
In the first game, CTX totaled 14 hits as a team and took advantage of three Roos errors to score their most runs in a single game since producing 32 runs back on Feb. 28, 2009 against Rust College.
Anissa Garcia got the offense going in the opening frame, driving a two-run double to center to score
Ashley Hallmark and
Erica Riley.
The Tornados led 6-0 after two innings, but broke the game wide open in the third as they nearly batted through the order twice, highlighted by a three-run double by
Megan Hooper, Riley two-run single and a
Landrei Stafford two-run double down the line.
Riley, Garcia, Cooper along with
Ashley Soto had three RBIs for the game, while six players had at least two runs scored, including
Ellie Congalton, who crossed the plate three times.
In the circle, newcomer Tisdale made herself feel right at home, not allowing an AC runner till the fourth inning. She finished the day allowing only one hit, one walk and striking out 10 Roos, tying the single-game program record set by teammate
Simone Langland back in 2018.
In the second game, CTX did not let up offensively.
After allowing a first-inning AC run, the Tornados responded quickly with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Hallmark tied the game up at 1-1 after sending her first home run of the season over the left field wall. Later in the inning, Garcia took advantage of a Roos' error to score and give CTX the lead.
From there the Tornados took control, scoring three runs in the third thanks to back-to-back RBI doubles by
Emily Moses and Garcia, followed by a Hooper RBI single, pushing the lead to 5-1.
Concordia Texas tacked on a run in the fourth and three more in the fifth, highlighted by back-to-back RBI singles by
Val Gallardo and
Cristina Ayala, to complete the run-rule and doubleheader sweep.
Langland picked up the win, allowing only two hits and one run over five innings and struck out four hitters.
Next, the Tornados will head down to Houston for a non-conference doubleheader matchup against St. Thomas (TX) on Feb. 13, beginning at 1 p.m.
