Tornados honor seniors, follow with third straight win

ROUND ROCK, Texas – Xavier Polk streaked down the sideline and did it himself, scoring his first goal of the season, as the Concordia Texas men's soccer team extended their win streak to three with a 1-0 shutout win over Hardin-Simmons on Friday at the Round Rock Multipurpose Complex.

Prior to the their showdown with the Cowboys, the Tornados recognized their seven seniors, Joel Abrego, Brandon Barrows, Adrian Guerrero, Edgar Guerrero, Zack Kusak, Ben Terry and Andres Williams, for their dedication and success with the program.

It was a physical game throughout the night as the teams combined for 26 fouls.

In the first half, CTX wasted no time in finding the back of the net as Kusak sent a long ball down the left sideline towards Polk, who held off a Cowboy defender and fired it past the goalie into the bottom right corner of the net to take an early 1-0 lead in the ninth minute.

From there, goalie Joshua Redding and the Tornados' defense held HSU in check, defending against eight shots in the half. At halftime, CTX held the 1-0 advantage.

In the second half, the Cowboys continued to press against the Tornados' defensive line, recording five shots in the period.

Concordia Texas nearly doubled its lead early in the half as Barrows sent a rocket from outside the box, but HSU's goalkeeper Reid Applewhite was there for the save.

In the final minutes, the Tornados defended multiple late charges by HSU and secured the 1-0 victory.

It is the third straight win for CTX and their second consecutive shutout of the season.

The Tornados will return to the field on March 19 when they will play host to Mary Hardin-Baylor at 7:30 p.m at the Round Rock Multipurpose Complex in Round Rock, Texas.
