Gomez's goal not enough as Tornados fall short to Mary Hardin-Baylor

ROUND ROCK, Texas – In a rematch of the 2019 American Southwest Conference Tournament semifinals, the Concordia Texas men's soccer team grabbed an early lead, but were unable to hold on, falling to Mary Hardin-Baylor 3-1 on Friday at the Round Rock Multipurpose Complex.

The Tornados entered the night on a three-game winning streak, facing off against the Cru, who they defeated 1-0 in the conference tournament semis last season.

Concordia Texas struck first with a first half goal from Victor Gomez, but three second-half goals from UMHB was too much to overcome on the night.

In the first half, the Tornados controlled possession for much of the period and took advantage of a corner kick opportunity in the 14th minute. Off the corner kick, Adrian Guerrero took the rebound of his shot and found Gomez inside the box, who fired it off the right post and in to give CTX an early 1-0 lead in the 15th minute.

The Tornados held the Cru to only one shot in the half and maintained the 1-0 advantage at halftime.

In the second half, UMHB switched up the pace, registering 12 shots in the period. In a matter of minutes early in the second half, the Cru scored twice, the second goal coming in the 52nd minute and CTX trailed 2-1.

The Tornados searched for an equalizer and nearly found it off the foot of Timothy Barney but his shot went high above the crossbar in the 71st minute.

Mary Hardin-Baylor added onto their lead in the 79th minute after a defensive mishap, making it 3-1.

Xavier Polk gave CTX one last scoring opportunity in the final minutes, but the Cru's Dalton Lloyd was there for the save as the Tornados' win streak came to an end.

Concordia Texas will next look forward to Howard Payne, hosting the Yellow Jackets in their home finale on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at the Round Rock Multipurpose Complex in Round Rock, Texas.
