ROUND ROCK, Texas – The Concordia Texas women's soccer team opened its two-game home stand on Friday, hosting reigning American Southwest Conference champions Hardin-Simmons in a conference showdown, falling short 2-0 at the Round Rock Multipurpose Complex.
Prior to the game, the Tornados honored their three seniors,
Cayla Gonzalez,
Brissa Renteria and
Stephanie Rike, for all their accomplishments during their career with the program.
In the first half, the Cowgirls were on the attack from kickoff. Despite four first-half saves by Tornados' goalkeeper
Elizabeth Jones, HSU grabbed an early lead, netting a goal in the 12th minute.
Concordia Texas had an early scoring opportunity as well, but
Emily Mowrer's free kick was saved by the Cowgirls' Haley Foley.
At the midway point, the Tornados trailed 1-0.
In the second half, CTX search for an early equalizer as Mowrer once again fired a shot, this one in the 52nd minute, but it was off target. The Cowgirls doubled their lead in the 59th minute after a scramble in the box saw the ball reach the back of the net.
Gonzalez gave one last effort for a last-second goal, but her shot was saved and the Tornados fell 2-0.
Concordia Texas will return to the pitch on March 19, hosting Mary Hardin Baylor at 5 p.m. at the Round Rock Multipurpose Complex in Round Rock, Texas.
