ROUND ROCK, Texas –
Marco Vazquez netted a pair of first-half goals and the Concordia Texas men's soccer team never looked back, cruising to a 4-1 victory over Howard Payne on Thursday in its regular season home finale at the Round Rock Multipurpose Complex.
The Tornados, who saw their three game win streak snapped last week, bounced back against Yellow Jackets, scoring a season-high four goals and left no doubt in the final result.
Vazquez, who enter the game as the team's leading scorer, added to his total in the game's opening minutes, scorching a shot into the back of the net in the fifth minute thanks to assists from
Bernabe Torres and
Adrian Guerrero to make it 1-0.
Vazquez did not have to wait long for his second goal on the afternoon, doubling CTX's lead in the 13th minute on a pair of passes from
Timothy Barney and Torres, pushing it to 2-0.
Howard Payne fought back though, cutting the Tornados' advantage in half on a defensive mishap in the 41st minute, scoring a one-on-one goal.
Concordia Texas' offense responded once more before the end of the first half as
Xavier Polk scored his second goal of the season in the 45th minute with
Zack Kusak and
Joel Abrego assisting on the score.
In the second half, despite 17 shots in the period, the Tornados were unable to add to their lead till the 86th minute, when
Edgar Guerrero found Abrego out wide, left of the box. Abrego raced down the side and sent in a perfect cross to Ben Terry, who finished it off for his first career collegiate goal, capping off CTX's 4-1 victory.
The Tornados finished the game with 29 shots, 12 of them being on goal. Torres and Abrego each finished with a pair of assists, while
Edgar Guerrero and
Adrian Guerrero each tallied their second assists of the season.
Concordia Texas will have a rematch against the Yellow Jackets on Saturday, traveling to Brownwood, Texas for their final game of the regular season with kick off set for 3:30 p.m.
