BROWNWOOD, Texas –
Timothy Barney notched a last-minute game-winning goal, lifting the Concordia Texas men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Howard Payne in their regular season finale.
Barney's first career goal came at exactly the right time, giving the Tornados a 2-1 lead at the 89:40 mark.
Concordia Texas played the more aggressive game, recording 18 shots to Howard Payne's five. Of the Tornados' 18 shots, 11 of them were on-goal.
Howard Payne found the first scoring opportunity, firing a shot in the fourth minute, but
Joshua Redding came down with the save. The Tornados struck a few minutes later when
Victor Gomez knocked in his second goal of the season, giving CTX an early 1-0 advantage.
The Tornados recorded six more shots in the remainder of the first half, four of which came from
Marco Vazquez, but were unable to come away with another score.
The Yellow Jackets fought back, evening the score at 1-1 with a goal in the 35th minute, and the match was locked in a tie at the halfway point.
In the second half, the Tornados came away empty on eight shots and it appeared as though the game would end in a 1-1 draw, but Barney saved the day by knocking in the game-winner with seconds left to play. The Tornados came out on top 2-1 in a thrilling end to the regular season.
With this victory, head coach
Nick Mims has become the winningest coach in the program's history after just four years at the helm, surpassing Corey Miller with his 34th career win.
The Tornados' regular season has come to an end, but the American Southwest Conference Tournament awaits them. This will be CTX's sixth straight conference tournament appearance, coming off a trip to the tournament's championship game last season.
Concordia Texas will host either East Texas Baptist or Belhaven in a quarterfinal matchup on Thursday at Round Rock Multipurpose Center in Round Rock, Texas, with the time to be announced at a later date.
