Abrego, Vazquez lead Tornados into ASC semifinal round

ROUND ROCK, Texas – Joel Abrego and Marco Vazquez provided the offense and the Concordia Texas men's soccer team allowed only one shot on goal in a 2-0 shutout win over Belhaven on Thursday to advance to the American Southwest Conference Tournament semifinals for the third year in a row.

The Tornados entered the matchup as the two seed out of the ASC West Division and hosted the Blazers, who finished the regular season as the three seed from the ASC East.

In a physical contest throughout the day with seven yellow cards as well as a red card being issued, CTX used a second-half surge thanks to Abrego and Vazquez's goals to hang on and advance to the ASC semifinals for the third straight year and is their fifth semifinals appearance in the last six seasons.

In the first half, the Tornados tallied seven shots with three of them being on goal. Their best scoring opportunity came late in the first half, in the 38th minute, as Adrian Guerrero fired from outside the box, hitting off the crossbar.

After 45 minutes, the teams headed to the locker room in a scoreless tie.

In the second half, Abrego wasted no time to give CTX their first lead of the day. Coming in the 50th minute, Abrego did all the work on his own from left outside the box before sending a strike off the right post and into the back of the net to break the tie.

The Tornados followed with three more shots on-goal in the half, but were unable to add to their lead until Marco Vazquez's goal in 87th minute. The sophomore out of Spring, Texas, crossed right, past the defender and fired the ball into the back of the net for his team-leading fifth goal of the season to make it 2-0.

Goalkeeper Joshua Redding, meanwhile, only had one save on the day, recording his third shutout of the season as CTX defeated the Blazers 2-0.

Next, the Tornados will travel to Abilene, Texas onto the campus of Hardin-Simmons for the semifinal round of the ASC Tournament. They will face the winner between UT Dallas and Sul Ross State on April 8 at a time to be announced, seeking their second straight conference championship game appearance.
