Nelson provides the game-winner as Tornados defeat McMurry

ABILENE, Texas – Landon Nelson's goal in the 66th minute proved to be the difference as the Concordia Texas men's soccer team shut out McMurry 1-0 in a non-conference matchup on Monday.

The Tornados were the more aggressive team throughout the day, recording 15 shots, 10 of them being on-goal.

In the first half, CTX tallied eight shots, but were unable to break through the War Hawks' defense. Edgar Guerrero nearly gave the Tornados their first lead in the 38th, firing a shot on-goal, but McMurry's goalie Angel Salazar was there for the save.

After 45 minutes, the teams headed to the locker room gridlocked in a scoreless game.

In the second half, Joel Abrego had an early scoring opportunity, but his shot hit the crossbar in the 48th minute.

Nelson, a sophomore out of San Antonio, checked in for the Tornados in the 60th minute and wasted no time finishing off his second career goal. Off an assist from Guerrero, Nelson found the back of the net in the 66th minute to make it 1-0.

Concordia Texas' defense, meanwhile, remained stout throughout the second half, limiting the War Hawks to only two shots, neither of them on goal, to secure their second straight road win.

It is the Tornados first shutout of the season and their first one since a 1-0 victory over Mary Hardin-Baylor back on Nov. 8, 2019 in the conference tournament semifinals.

Concordia Texas will return to the pitch on Friday for their home opener, hosting Hardin-Simmons in a conference matchup at 7:30 p.m. at the Round Rock Multipurpose Complex in Round Rock, Texas.
