Block, Tornados split a pair against Hardin-Simmons

ABILENE, Texas – Three players recorded double-doubles, including a 22-kill, 12-dig performance by KyLexus Block as the Concordia Texas volleyball team split a doubleheader against Hardin-Simmons on Friday.

Coming off a doubleheader sweep of Howard Payne last week, the Tornados looked to continue their winning ways against the Cowgirls.

In the first match of the night, CTX jumped out to a two-set lead and then held off a HSU comeback to win in five sets 25-19, 25-19, 21-25, 26-28 and 15-8.

Block, the transfer from Texas A&M-Kingsville, had a monstrous night, racking up a team-high 22 kills and hitting at a .311 percentage. She also finished the match with 12 digs for her first double-double of the season.

Sarah Ghormley, coming off an American Southwest Conference West Division Offensive Player of the Week performance, notched her third-straight double-double on the year, producing 13 kills along with 17 digs.

Meanwhile, teammate Georgia Quiroz also registered her third double-double in a row after a team-best 21-dig, 32-assist showing in the win.

After splitting the first four sets of the night, the Tornados and Cowgirls headed to a decisive fifth set. In the final set, Block had four kills alone as CTX closed out the match on a 5-1 spurt to clinch the win, capped off by a Nicole Deering kill.

Laina DeLeon set a career high in digs for the second straight match, finishing with 18 on the night.

In the second match of the doubleheader, the Tornados were unable to string together a run, falling to the Cowgirls in three sets, 25-11, 25-13 and 25-14.

No CTX player finished in double figures in any statistical category for the match as HSU dominated the opening set.

In the second set, despite only allowing five Cowgirls kills, the Tornados were unable to retake the lead after winning the first two initial points of the set and trailed 2-0 heading into the third.

In the final set, CTX pulled within three at 13-10 after an Audri Crawford kill and a HSU attack error. It was as close as the team would get in the set though, as the Cowgirls closed out the match on a 12-4 to complete the sweep and split the doubleheader.

Next, the Tornados will return home for their home-opening match when they will host Mary Hardin-Baylor in a doubleheader on Tuesday at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. inside Concordia Fieldhouse.
