Tornados take down UT Dallas 3-0, advance to ASC title game

ABILENE, Texas – Adrian Guerrero notched his first goal of the season as a part of a second half offensive surge, leading the Concordia Texas men's soccer team past UT Dallas 3-0 on Thursday and are headed to the American Southwest Conference Tournament title game for the second season in a row.

The Tornados faced the Comets in their first head-to-head meeting since the 2019 ASC Championship game.

Concordia Texas exacted revenge on the Comets, recording their fourth shutout of the season and receiving offensive production from Guerrero, Marco Vazquez and Juan Gonzalez to advance to the conference championship.

After a quiet first half, where neither team was able to find the back of the net, the Tornados found their offensive rhythm early and often in the second period.

Guerrero started the scoring for CTX in the 57th minute. On assists from Vazquez and Victor Gomez, Guerrero sent in his first goal of the season to break the scoring drought and give the Tornados a 1-0 lead.

The floodgates opened offensively for CTX as they extended their lead with goals in the 61st and 63rd minutes of the game.

Vazquez scored for the third time in the team's last four games, firing past UTD's goalie in the 61st minute on an assist from Bernabe Torres, doubling the Tornados' lead.

Gonzalez, meanwhile, scored his first career collegiate goal, doing it all on his own in the 63rd minute to push the advantage to 3-0.

In the 72nd minute, after a CTX foul in the box, the Comets were awarded a penalty kick. Goalie Joshua Redding was there for the save though, keeping the shutout intact. He finished the game with two saves.

UT Dallas recorded four shots in the final minutes, but none were on target as the Tornados secured their second straight trip to the ASC championship game.

Concordia Texas will face the winner between Hardin-Simmons and Ozarks in the championship match set to kick off on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the HSU Soccer Complex in Abilene, Texas.
