BROWNWOOD, Texas –
Anissa Garcia had a pair of hits, including a two-run single as the Concordia Texas softball team rallied from a four-run deficit but it was not enough, falling late to Howard Payne 6-5 in the series finale on Saturday.
The Tornados entered the day, seeking their second straight sweep after winning the first two games of the series on Friday.
Concordia Texas opened the scoring with a run in the second.
Emily Schmuck led off with a double, moved to third on a sac bunt and came around to score on a Yellow Jackets' error for a 1-0 lead.
Howard Payne though, scored five unanswered runs over the next three frames and led 5-1 heading to the fifth.
The Tornados fought back, scoring three runs of their own in the fifth to pull within one.
Megan Hooper began the rally with a lead-off double. After an
Erica Riley single, Moses scored Hooper with an RBI single. Two outs later, Garcia came up clutch with a two-run single into left, cutting the deficit down to 5-4.
Concordia Texas tied it up in the following inning thanks to a sacrifice fly by
Cristina Ayala, which scored
Chelsea Beach to even it at 5-all.
Howard Payne responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning and retook the lead.
The Tornados looked for another comeback in the seventh, but were retired in order, falling 6-5 in the finale.
Eight different players had a hit for CTX, including two-hit performances by Garcia and Riley, while Hooper had a hit, a walk and a run scored.
The Tornados will begin their final three-game series of the regular season on Friday, traveling to Belton, Texas to face Mary Hardin-Baylor in a doubleheader at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
