BELTON, Texas –
Megan Hooper's stolen base in the sixth inning put her into the school record books, becoming the program's single-season steals leader with 24 on the year as the Concordia Texas softball team came up short against Mary Hardin-Baylor in a doubleheader on Friday.
Hooper, a freshman out of Leander, Texas, tied the school's single-season steals record, held by Jodi Hierholzer, back on April 23 with a stolen base against Howard Payne. In the first game of a doubleheader against the Cru, Hooper swiped second base in the sixth inning and put herself above the rest with 24 stolen bases in a single season.
In the first game of the day, the Tornados scored the first run of the day on a wild pitch, but were unable to add to it, falling to UMHB 7-1.
Anissa Garcia had two hits, including a single in the third inning, and went from second to home on a pair of wild pitches to score CTX's lone run. Hooper added a hit and walk for the game and etched her name in record books in the sixth.
The Cru, meanwhile, responded with a run of their own in the third to tie the game back up at 1-all. They went on to score in the next three innings, including a four-run outburst in the fifth, to take a 7-1 advantage after six frames.
In their final at-bat, the Tornados had back-to-back two-out singles by
Macey Thompson and Garcia, but a strikeout ended the threat and CTX fell in game one.
In the second game of the day, Thompson had her first career multi-hit performance, while
Ashley Hallmark had a two-run double in the fourth, but UMHB scored three runs in the bottom half of the fourth, one more in the fifth and the Tornados fell short 4-3 to close out the doubleheader.
Concordia Texas once again opened the scoring, pushing across three runs in the fourth.
Hooper led off the frame with a single and reached second on a Cru error on
Erica Riley's ground ball. After a sac bunt, Hallmark rocketed a double into the gap to score both runners. She scored later in the inning on Tinajero's RBI ground out to make it 3-0.
In the bottom half of the inning though, the first five UMHB batters reached base, scoring three runs of their own to tie the game up at 3-3.
The Cru went in front one inning later, scratching across a run to take 4-3 lead.
The Tornados nearly tied the game up in the sixth as
Emily Moses ripped a one-out triple to right, but was thrown out at the plate one batter later after a fly out to left.
Concordia Texas was unable to extend the game in the seventh and fell 4-3.
The Tornados will face Mary Hardin-Baylor in the series finale on Sunday at 2 p.m. in Belton, Texas. The game was originally scheduled for Saturday, but was moved back due to the forecasted weather. With a win, CTX will clinch the two seed in the American Southwest Conference West Division and have a bye in the first round of the conference tournament.
