AUSTIN, Texas –
Brandon Goynes smashed his third home run of the season and worked a pair of walks, but the Concordia Texas baseball team fell short 8-2 in a non-conference matchup against Texas Lutheran on Tuesday at Tornado Field.
The Tornados, playing in their first home game since March 13, had a bullpen day on the mound, utilizing a total of seven pitchers.
David Matthews earned the start for CTX, tossing a scoreless opening frame before the Bulldogs took a lead with a pair of runs in the second.
They added on another run in the fourth, extending their lead to 3-0.
In the bottom half of the inning, Goynes, a freshman out of Temple, Texas, put the Tornados on the board with a leadoff solo shot over the left field wall. In the following inning,
Marcus Thach knocked in
Aaron Gomez from second on an RBI single into right, cutting the deficit to 3-2.
Concordia Texas had a pair of scoring opportunities in both the sixth and seventh innings, putting a runner in scoring position each time, but were unable to capitalize. They finished the night leaving eight runners on base.
Texas Lutheran, meanwhile, tacked on two runs in the seventh and extended their lead with three insurance runs in the ninth to take an 8-2 lead. The Tornados were could not spark a rally in the ninth, falling short to the Bulldogs.
Concordia Texas will return to conference play on Friday when they will host McMurry in a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. at Tornado Field.
