Tornados sweep Hardin-Simmons, take first win of the season

AUSTIN, Texas – Sarah Ghormley and Alyssa Legette each recorded a double-double, leading the way for the Concordia Texas volleyball team as they picked up their first win of the season with a clean 3-0 sweep of Hardin-Simmons on Saturday.

Ghormley filled the stat sheet with 16 kills and 11 digs, hitting at an efficient .406 clip, and Legette picked up 31 assists and 11 digs. Kylexus Block also aided the Tornados' sweep, recording five kills, four blocks, and a team-high 14 digs.

Concordia Texas took all three sets in convincing fashion, besting HSU by at least six points in every frame to take a 3-0 sweep.

In the opening set, the Tornados jumped out to an early 8-3 lead behind a pair of kills from Nicole Deering and never looked back, holding a strong advantage throughout and taking the frame with a score of 25-16. Audri Crawford also had a pair of kills in the set, and Savannah Kari won back-to-back points with a service ace and a kill.

The second set began with a 5-4 HSU lead, but the Tornados erupted for an 8-2 run thanks to two kills and a block from Abi Hilpert, taking a 12-7 lead. Ghormley added four kills to her stat line through the remainder of the set, and CTX came out on top of the second set 25-18.

The third and final set was a back-and-forth affair, the frame reaching a 16-16 tie, but the Tornados scored five unanswered points behind a service ace and a kill from Crawford, taking a 21-16 lead. This advantage proved to be enough, as CTX completed the sweep with a 25-19 victory in the third set.

Crawford and Hilpert were dominant at the net, each of them recording a career-high four blocks, and Deering totaled six kills and a pair of blocks.

With the victory, the Tornados improve to a 1-6 record overall and even their ASC record at 1-1.

Next, Concordia Texas will play a four-game stretch on the road, beginning with a trip to Longview, Texas for a showdown with ASC foe LeTourneau on Friday at 6 pm.
