BOX SCORE ROUND ROCK, Texas – The Concordia Texas men's soccer team had an offensive explosion, scoring five goals, including a pair from
Antonio Rios, and defeated
Schreiner in dominating fashion 5-2 on Wednesday at the Round Rock Multipurpose Complex.
The Tornados, who entered the game having scored only three goals through the team's first three games, controlled possession and netted five goals in the win.
It is the most goals CTX has scored in a game as well as the most goals scored in a half, four total, since defeating Louisiana College 9-0 back on Oct. 17, 2019.
Marco Vazquez, who entered the season as the American Southwest Conference Preseason Offensive Player to Watch, opened the scoring for CTX, netting his first goal of the season in the 14th minute after precise passing from teammates
Carlos Huato and
Melvin Molina.
Ten minutes later, the Tornados doubled their lead on Molina's stunning shot from outside the box, hitting the right post and into the net.
Rios, a freshman from Houston, had an impressive half, finding the back of the net twice.
He scored his first career collegiate goal in the 27th minute on a
Timothy Barney cross into the box to push the lead to 3-0.
He followed with his second score in the 44th minute. After a defensive takeaway by
Arlen Garcia, he found Rios, who went one-on-one with the goalie firing it into the net to give the Tornados a 4-0 edge heading into halftime.
In the second half, SU initiated a comeback, cutting CTX's lead in half with a pair of goals, the second one coming in the 75th minute to make it 4-2.
The Tornados were quick to respond though as Molina registered his third assist of the afternoon, finding
Mikey Lott, who shot it past the Mountaineers' goalie for his first career goal and extending the lead to 5-2 in the 76th minute.
Concordia Texas would not allow another goal in the period and cruised to the 5-2 victory.
The Tornados will have a quick turnaround, traveling up the road to Georgetown, Texas for a non-conference showdown against Southwestern on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
