GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Concordia Texas men's soccer team went to extra time for the second time this season, but came up short in physical battle, falling to Southwestern 1-0 on Friday.
The Tornados were coming off their biggest offensive outburst in nearly two years after defeating Schreiner 5-2 on Wednesday, looking for their third win in their first four games.
It was a physical bout throughout the night between CTX and the Pirates as seven yellow cards were handed out.
In the first half, the Tornados had early opportunities, securing a corner kick in the 2nd minute, but were unable to convert it into a score.
Melvin Molina, who had three assists in Wednesday's win, had a pair of shots in the first half, but both were blocked.
Each team recorded six shots in the period, but the game remained scoreless going into halftime.
In the second half, goalkeeper
Joshua Redding was a wall for CTX, tallying four saves in the half, including one in the 52nd minute that prevented an SU goal.
The Tornados had a late chance on
Xavier Polk's shot in the 76th minute, but it was saved and the teams remained in a 0-0 tie after 90 minutes of play and headed into extra time.
In the first extra time period, Tim Barney nearly secured the game-winning goal for CTX in the 92nd minute, but the Pirates' Jack Viles made the save.
Southwestern broke through the Tornados' defense in the 98th minute, scoring the game's first goal and CTX fell 1-0.
Next, the Tornados will prepare for conference play, taking on LeTourneau on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in Longview, Texas.
