ALPINE, Texas –
Sarah Ghormley and
Kylexus Block each reached double figures in kills, but it was not enough against Sul Ross State on Tuesday, falling 3-1 on the road in the Gallego Center.
The Tornados continued their conference road trip after facing LeTourneau and UT Dallas last weekend.
Ghormley registered a season-high 20 kills in the match, helping CTX take the first set, but dropped the following three frames, losing 25-16, 15-25, 18-25 and 18-25.
In the opening set, the Tornados, busted out of the gates with an 8-0 run capped off by back-to-back kills from
Audri Crawford and Ghormley.
Ghormley, the junior out of Bastrop, Texas, tallied eight kills in the set as CTX widen their lead to double digits at 15-5. The Tornados did not look back and headed in the second set with a 1-0 advantage.
In the following set, CTX fell behind early as the Lobos jumped out to a 10-3 edge. The Tornados climbed back into it after a SRSU attack error cut the deficit down to 14-10. The Lobos hit .385 in the frame and pulled away with an 11-5 run to even the match at 1-all.
Block, recorded seven kills and hit at a .455 mark in the third set, but CTX fell behind early once again and were unable to recover, and headed to the fourth set trailing.
In the final frame, Ghormley had another strong showing, posting eight kills in the set, including one that pulled the Tornados within two at 14-12.
Sul Ross State responded though, reeling off a 7-3 run on their way to winning the match in four sets.
Block racked up 15 kills in the loss, while teammate
Alyssa Legette had a career-high 41 assists.
Kaitlyn Ruiz, meanwhile, recorded a team-high 11 digs on the night.
Concordia Texas will close out their road trip with a showdown against conference foe Mary Hardin-Baylor on Friday at 6 p.m. in Belton, Texas.
