Tornados thrash LeTourneau 6-1 in ASC opener

LONGVIEW, Texas – The Concordia Texas men's soccer team had six different players score a goal and had its highest scoring output of the season with a commanding 6-1 victory over LeTourneau to open conference play on Thursday.

The Tornados headed into American Southwest Conference play against the YellowJackets on Thursday coming off back-to-back non-conference losses, but bounced back in a huge way, scoring their most goals in a single game since a nine-goal performance against Louisiana College back on Oct. 17. 2019.

In the first half, CTX recorded 17 shots as a team, but only amounted to one goal.

In the 21st minute, Theo Givens fired his first collegiate goal into the back of the net thanks to an assist from Marco Vazquez as the Tornados grabbed the 1-0 lead.

Meanwhile, the CTX defense held the YellowJackets to only two shots for the whole half and headed into the locker room with the advantage.

In the second half, the Tornados stayed on the offensive, racking up 13 shots in the period alone.

Melvin Molina did not wait long to double CTX's lead, scoring in the 48th minute off Vazquez's second assist of the night.

Vazquez would notch his third assist of the night, finding Christian Barillas in the 71st minute, who scored the first goal of his career to push the lead to 3-0.

It is the second time this season a Tornado has recorded three assists in a single game, joining teammate Melvin Molina, who had three assists in the team's 5-2 win over Schreiner back on Sept. 15.

Concordia Texas continued their scoring onslaught, as Zack Kusak scored in the 77th minute, followed by Leo Lopez tallying a goal of his own in the 79th minute.

LeTourneau ended the shutout in the 80th minute with their first score of the night, before Victor Gomez capped off the Tornados' victory with his second goal of the season coming in the final minute of the game as CTX won it 6-1.

Richard Aguirre, Barillas and Adrian Guerrero, who was playing in his first game back this season, all picked up assists as well in the win.

Up next, the Tornados will remain on the road, traveling to Marshall, Texas to face East Texas Baptist on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
