SAN ANTONIO –
Joshua Bode,
Esteban Arredondo and
Evan Pena Jr. all picked up wins in the first round of the flight A singles draw on Thursday, as the Concordia Texas men's tennis team competed in the first day of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional.
The Tornados had five players representing in the flight A draw of the singles bracket of the regional, which included Bode, Arredondo, Pena Jr. along with
Nico De La Pena and
Jorge Garcia.
Meanwhile, teammates
Jacob Naiser and
Jesse West competed in the flight B singles bracket as each player played their opening round match on Thursday.
Bode, who was the ITA Regional singles champion back in 2018, made quick work of LeTourneau's Nathan Schmidt with a 6-0, 6-1 decision to move on to the second round.
Arredondo dropped the first set in his matchup against Hardin-Simmons' Davyn Williford, but bounced back with a 6-0 second set win and clinched the match with a 10-5 decision in a pro-set tiebreaker.
Pena Jr. picked up the third win of the day for CTX, defeating Southwestern's Hemanshu Rambojun 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the next round.
Garcia and De La Pena, meanwhile, came up short in their first round matchups and move on to the flight A consolation bracket.
In the flight B singles bracket, West rolled past the YellowJackets' Logan Nelson with a 6-1, 7-5 win, while Naiser came up short 1-6, 4-6 against Mary Hardin-Baylor's Robert Galligan and moves on to the consolation side of the bracket.
The tournament will continue on Friday with the second and third rounds of the singles brackets to be played as well as the first two rounds of the doubles brackets, where the Tornados will have three pairings competing to advance.
The second day of the tournament will get under way at 8 a.m. on Friday with matches being played on the campus of Trinity University as well as the Blossom Tennis Center in San Antonio.
