SAN ANTONIO –
Kylexus Block recorded a double-double and totaled 27 kills, but her performance was spoiled as the Concordia Texas volleyball team dropped the final two matches of the Trinity Tournament on Saturday.
The Tornados entered the day looking to bounce back after an 0-2 start to the tournament, taking on Hendrix in the afternoon match and Trinity in the nightcap.
In the first match of the day against Hendrix, Ghormley and Block led the way with 13 and 14 kills, respectively. The Tornados battled Hendrix through three tough sets, but ultimately fell three sets to none. Block added 12 digs on the defensive side of the ball, giving her a double-double, and
Alyssa Legette and
Avery Smith both recorded double-digit digs.
The opening set saw CTX hold a 16-10 lead behind three service aces, one from Kailtyn Ruiz and two from Smith, but a 6-1 run from Hendrix brought the score to 17-16. Later in the set, the Tornados evened the score at 25-25, but Hendrix took two straight points to win set one 27-25.
In the next set, CTX took an early 8-4 lead thanks to two kills and an ace from the arm of Legette, but Hendrix answered with a 7-3 run to tie the set at 11-11. The Warriors did not stop, playing to a 22-15 lead, but a kill from
Krystal Gundy sparked a 4-0 run, bringing CTX back within three. Despite two late kills from Block, Hendrix prevailed, winning the second set 25-22.
Block lead the way in the third set with seven kills, but Hendrix took an early 5-4 lead and did not look back, holding an advantage the entire set. Ultimately, the Tornados fell in three sets.
Concordia Texas squared off with Trinity in the second match of the day, falling in three sets despite another double-digit kill performance from Block. Ghormley picked up eight kills of her own, and Legette came away with seven digs.
In the opening set, a pair of early kills from Block along with one from Ghormley kept the Tornados within striking distance. With the Tornados trailing 12-9, TU took an 8-5 run, extending their lead to 20-12, and scored five unanswered points to end the set with a score of 25-12.
After beginning the second set on the wrong end of a 7-1 run, CTX answered as a pair of aces from
Krystal Gundy and a kill from the arm of
Dani Wysocki brought the Tornados within one, the score now 10-9. Trinity rallied and held on to their lead, taking the set 25-20 despite five kills from Block.
The third and final frame saw Trinity take an early 10-2 lead, but a pair of kills from Wysocki led the Tornados back into it as the score now read 11-12 with a slight advantage for TU. Block went on for three more kills in the sets, but the Tornados fell 25-17 in the final set.
Ruiz had another strong game as a setter, recording 17 assists to bring her total 34 for the day, and Wysocki notched four kills.
With the Trinity University Tournament at a close, the Tornados will look towards ASC play. Concordia Texas will host East Texas Baptist on Sept. 11 at 1 pm in Concordia Fieldhouse, hoping to pick up their first victory of the season in their conference opener.
