AUSTIN, Texas – Despite a strong first half performance, the Concordia Texas women's basketball team suffered a 67-58 defeat against Mary Hardin-Baylor on Tuesday.
The Tornados returned to their home floor after splitting a two-game stint on the road, beating Belhaven and falling at East Texas Baptist on the weekend.
Chelsea Cogborn posted the high mark for the Tornados, scoring a career-high 14 points as well as adding four rebounds and a block.
A strong second quarter saw the Tornados take a lead into halftime, but the Cru roared back in the second half to regain the lead. At the final buzzer, CTX found themselves on the wrong end of the score.
Chelsea Cogborn led the way for the Tornados in the opening half with 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting, and
Havyn Perez provided seven of her 11 points in the first two quarters.
Kennedy Donovan and
Natalie Velardez each drained a three-pointer in the first quarter and Cogborn hit back-to-back mid-range jumpers, but UMHB stayed ahead and ended the period with an 18-11 lead.
Down by 8 points in the second quarter, a jumper from
Havyn Perez at the 4:15 mark sparked a 15-4 CTX run to close out the period. Cogborn supplied eight points during the stretch, and Perez capped it off with a three-pointer in the final seconds to give the Tornados a 32-29 lead heading into halftime.
In the third quarter, a bucket from Velardez gave CTX their biggest lead of the night, bringing the score to 39-34 with 6:23 remaining the period. The Cru closed the gap, tying the game at 46-46 with 3:04 on the clock, and put together a 6-0 run to close out the quarter. Heading into the final period, the Tornados trailed 52-46.
Velardez and
Erin Toro each recorded four points in the final quarter, including a basket in the paint from Velardez that cut the lead to five and put the Tornados within striking distance with 34 seconds remaining. However, the Cru kept steady, and CTX was unable to complete a comeback. Ultimately, the Tornados fell 67-58.
Concordia Texas will look forward to chance to bounce back on Saturday when they travel Clarksville, Ark. for a bout with Ozarks. Set for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off, the Tornados will continue ASC play with their second matchup against UO this season.
