Tornados' late comeback not enough against Mary Hardin-Baylor

BELTON, Texas – Five Concordia Texas men's basketball players scored in double figures, led by Luis Gonzalez's 22 points, but it was not enough to complete the comeback, falling to Mary Hardin-Baylor 111-101 on Monday to snap their two-game win streak.

The Tornados, who returned to the court for their first game since Dec. 19, faced the Cru, who had won nine of their first 10 games on the season.

Concordia Texas went toe-to-toe with UMHB early on in the first half, thanks to the play of Donovan Stafford, who had eight points off the bench on the night. The Tornados pulled within one at the 10:27 mark after Stafford's putback layup made it 21-20.

It was as close as CTX would cut it though as the Cru responded with a 24-5 run, breaking away to a double-digit advantage. Gonzalez, meanwhile finished with nine points in the first half, but the Tornados headed into the locker room trailing 58-37.

In the second half, after facing a deficit as large 94-62 at the 9:09 mark, CTX began to slowly chip away thanks to the play of their bench.

The Tornados finished with a 50-point output from their bench, highlighted by the play of Trevon Hester and Adolfo Martinez, who combined for 22 points and knocked down a total of seven 3-pointers.

Meanwhile, Henderson, who only had four points in the first half, found his offensive rhythm, scoring 12 points along with five rebounds in the second half. He finished with his second straight double-double, totaling 16 points and 11 rebounds.

DJ Pigford had a near double-double, dishing out a career-high seven assists and producing 11 points, while Gonzalez had five assists of his own and scored 13 of his team-high 22 points in the second half.

Concordia Texas stormed back in the final minutes of the game, going on a 17-4 run, including a perfect 4-for-4 performance by Martinez from behind the arc to cut the deficit to 10, but ran out of time, falling to UMHB 111-101.

The Tornados will now look ahead to a two-game homestand, hosting Howard Payne on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. inside Concordia Fieldhouse.
