Tornados scorch Yellow Jackets with offensive barrage

AUSTIN, Texas – Donovan Stafford had a career-high 19 points and 10 rebounds for his first collegiate double-double and guided the Concordia Texas men's basketball team to a dominating win over Howard Payne 113-75 on Thursday inside Concordia Fieldhouse.

The Tornados, whose second-half comeback fell short against Mary Hardin-Baylor on Monday, were in an offensive rhythm throughout the night as they shot over 52% from the floor and had their highest scoring output since Nov. 22, 2019 when they scored 114 points in a win over Pacific.

Concordia Texas finished with five double-digit scorers and all 13 players each scored at least three points on night.

Stafford led the charge, producing a career-high 19 points and 10 boards, including six on the offensive end for his first career double-double performance. Meanwhile, DJ Pigford knocked down three of team's 11 3-pointers, finishing with a career-high 15 points.

The Tornados and Yellow Jackets went back-and-forth in the first half as HPU pulled ahead 25-24 on a Jacob Helzer 3-pointer with 8:23 to go.

Concordia Texas would answer with a 15-0 run, aided by Alexander Estrada's five points, and never looked back. Estrada finished the game going 4-for-7 from the field for 10 points.

Luis Gonzalez's lone basket of the period right before halftime, gave the Tornados their largest lead of the game and the team headed into the locker room with a 53-34 advantage.

Antoine Henderson was influential for CTX in the half, scoring 10 of 15 points and pulling down four of his seven rebounds in the period.

In the second half, the Tornados found their shooting stroke, going 22-for-38 from the floor and racked up 16 assists.

Trevor Hester was a key cog for CTX, dishing out a season-high seven assists and adding eight points off the bench. Meanwhile, Adolfo Martinez, who had 12 points in his collegiate debut against the Cru, went 3-for-5 from behind the arc and finished the game with 10 points.

The Tornados ballooned their lead to as much as 39 points after Cameron Jones made his lone basket of the night in the final minute of the game and cruised to a 113-75 victory over HPU.

Concordia Texas will now look ahead to a conference matchup against Sul Ross State with tip-off set for 3 p.m. on Saturday inside Concordia Fieldhouse.
