AUSTIN, Texas - The Concordia Texas men's basketball team cruised with a 91-78 victory over Howard Payne. Freshman guard
Jaylon Johnson (six rebounds, five assists) poured in a game-high 21, while
Dylen Scales posted a career-high 7 assists inside the Concordia Fieldhouse on Saturday.
The Tornados benched impressed as they outscored the Yellowjackets' bench 47-17. CTX also outscored their opponent in the paint, 52-38.
A layup by
Antoine Henderson put Concordia up 15-14 with 13:56 remaining in the first half, and the Tornados did not trail again. A pair of free throws by
Branden Myart at 8:58 capped off a 22-3 flurry by the Tornados. Maintaining their lead, Concordia led 47-34 at the half.
Their lead would reach as much as 18 points in the second half, while HPU would get the game within single digits at 69-60 with just over eight minutes remaining. A three by Johnson would punctuate a 7-0 run by Concordia to push their lead back up to 16 points with five minutes left. This would give them the breathing room need to secure the victory.
Concordia Texas will remain at home to host Sul Ross State on Monday, Dec. 19th. Tip off is set for 3 p.m.
