BOX SCORE AUSTIN, Texas - Gritty play led the way to a wire-to-wire 86-76 victory for the Concordia Texas men's basketball team over Sul Ross. It was a balanced effort as four players reached double figure scoring and two players plateaued 10-plus rebounds inside the CTX Fieldhouse on Monday.
The Tornados turned 22 Lobos turnovers into 30 points, and outscored their opponent 21-6 in second chance points.
A 5-0 run to start the game and a 7-0 run sparked an early 14-5 lead for Concordia. The Lobos battled back to make it an 18-18 game midway through the first, but CTX counter punched with an 18-3 flurry over the next four minutes. Sul Ross once again fought to make it close at 41-36 as the Tornados took a 46-38 advantage into the half.
Concordia maintained their distance as Sul Ross came within four points on three different occasions early in the second half. Up 66-61 with 10:30 left, Donovan Stafford snatched an offensive board and found Adolfo Martinez lurking for a corner three to spark a 10-2 burst for CTX. The Tornados would not let the lead dip to single digits again for their third straight double-digit win.
Concordia Texas will now enjoy Christmas Break before hosting Texas Lutheran on Thursday, Dec. 29th. Tip off is set for 3:00 p.m.
