AUSTIN, Texas - The Concordia Texas women's basketball team claimed their second conference win in a row with a 72-67 triumph over Howard Payne. Senior forward Chelsea Cogborn posted a career-high 22 points with 7 rebounds inside the Concordia Fieldhouse on Saturday.
The Tornados got great production from their bench as they outscored the Yellowjackets 27-5 in bench points. They also had a double-digit edge in points off turnovers (21-11).
Down 5-4 midway through the first quarter, a jumper by Jordan Bravo sparked a 13-2 run to end the quarter. Howard Payne would respond by tying the game at 17-17 with 6:24 left in the second quarter. Both teams would trade baskets for a 25-all tie with 1:28 left in the quarter. Concordia would hit four straight free throws, and HPU hit a layup for a 29-27 score at the half.
Outscoring their opponents 23-12, the Tornados started had a strong third quarter. A layup by Cogborn with 1:12 left in the quarter extended their advantage back to double digits as Concordia Texas took a 52-39 lead into the final quarter.
The Tornados lead would extend to as much as 18 points, but the Yellowjackets would use a full-court press to speed up the game and come within single-digits. The Tornados would hold steady to preserve the win.
Concordia Texas will remain at home to host Sul Ross State on Monday, Dec. 19th. Tip off is set for 1 p.m.
