BROWNWOOD, Texas –
Grayson Lee had four hits, drove in a career-high seven runs and the Concordia Texas baseball team had an offensive explosion, cruising past Howard Payne 16-1 to clinch the series win on Saturday.
The Tornados, who were coming off a 13-run offensive performance in their season opener, continued to be effective at the plate, racking up 13 hits as a team with multi-hit showings by Lee,
EJ Sanchez, Mason Dubois and
Aaron Gomez.
The first five hitters of CTX's lineup went a combined 9-for-18, scoring 11 runs and totaled 11 RBIs.
The Yellow Jackets struck first though, pushing across a run in the opening frame, but it was all
Easton Migl allowed on the afternoon.
Migl tossed five innings of one-run ball, allowing only four hits and struck out three batters to pick up his first win of 2022.
The Tornados responded in the following inning, putting up five runs in the frame, aided by Lee's bases-clearing 3-run double that made it 4-1. Sanchez reached on a throwing error and Lee came around to score to make it 5-1.
Two innings later, CTX blew the game open, batting around and scoring nine runs in the fourth. Lee and Sanchez had back-to-back RBI singles followed by Dubois scoring two more with a two-run single up the middle.
Otto Franz and Gomez joined in on the action, recording RBI singles of their own, extending the lead to 11-1. Lee recorded two more RBIs in the inning, singling up the middle to drive in
Aaron San Miguel and Gomez.
The Tornados added two more runs in the seventh and completed the seven-inning run-rule, defeating Howard Payne 16-1 to secure the series win.
San Miguel, Watts and Lee each finished the day with three runs scored, while Sanchez, Dubois and Gomez each had a pair of RBIs for the game.
Next, CTX will play at home for the first time this season, hosting Sul Ross State in a doubleheader on Friday at Tornado Field, beginning at 4 p.m.
