Tinajero makes history, hits for program's first-ever cycle

ALPINE, Texas – Hailee Tinajero made program history with a 5-for-6 performance, hitting for the first-ever cycle in school history as the Concordia Texas softball team split a doubleheader against Sul Ross State on Friday.

Tinajero, a junior out of Corpus Christi, Texas, was unstoppable at the plate, reaching in her first five at-bats. She finished the game 5-for-6 with four runs scored and five RBIs as the Tornados walloped the Lobos 21-14 in the second game of the day's doubleheader.

Tinajero recorded a triple in her first at-bat of the afternoon, scoring the game's first run in the opening inning. After one inning, the teams were tied at 2-all.

In the following frame, Tinajero recorded her second hit of the game, one of her two doubles on the night as CTX produced an eight-run inning and jumped out to a 10-2 lead.

One inning later, Tinajero made it 12-2 with a two-run shot over the wall in left-center as the Tornados scored three runs in the inning, making it 13-2. She completed the cycle in the fifth, leading off the inning with an infield single.

She is the first Tornado in program history to hit for the cycle and the first player to complete the feat in the American Southwest Conference since McMurry's Nina Hernandez did it back on March 21, 2018.

Tinajero and Erica Riley each finished with five hits for the game, tying Angelica Arroyo's individual game record set back on Feb. 21, 2017 for CTX. Tinajero also set the individual school record for total bases, finishing the game with 12 and breaking Candace Velasquez's mark set back in March 2010.

Meanwhile, the Tornados as a team, posted 21 runs in the game, withstanding a late comeback by SRSU for a 21-14 victory.

The 21 runs are tied for the second-most runs scored in a single game by CTX, tying the 21-run mark set last season against Austin College on Feb. 6. The Tornados also tied the single-game record for most hits, matching the 25 hits the program collected back on Feb. 28, 2009 against Rust College.

Riley finished 5-for-6 from the plate, scoring four runs and driving in a pair. Emily Moses, Ryleigh Ward, Megan Hooper and Kaelyn Cash all had multi-hit performances, combining for eight RBIs.

In the first game of the doubleheader, the teams battled in a pitcher's duel that would result in an extra-inning affair, where the Tornados fell short in the eighth inning 3-2.

Concordia Texas struck first as Kylie Pavlicek knocked a one-out triple down the right-field line and scored on Riley's RBI single in the opening frame.

Meanwhile, Bailey Tisdale was dealing in the circle through the first three innings, racking up five strikeouts. She ran into trouble in the fourth as the Lobos plated two runs to go in front 2-1.

In the following inning, the Tornados responded as Ellie Congalton reached on an error, advancing to second. After a sac bunt, she scored on Cristina Ayala's RBI fielder's choice to knot it up at 2-all.

In the eighth, CTX nearly retook the lead as Ayala led off with a single, but was doubled off later in the inning as Erica Riley lined out into a double play.

Sul Ross State pushed across a run in the bottom half of the inning, winning it 3-2.

The Tornados will go for the series win on Saturday with first pitch set for noon at Lobo Softball Field in Alpine, Texas.
