Tornados blowout Belhaven in finale, earn bid to ASC Tournament

AUSTIN, Texas – Seniors Sean Phillips and Alexander Estrada combined for 31 points, while senior Zaid Harris dished out three assists and grabbed six rebounds to help the Concordia Texas men's basketball team snap their skid with a 96-62 blowout of Belhaven on Saturday.

The Tornados entered Concordia Fieldhouse for the final time this season, celebrating senior day prior to the game. Concordia Texas was led by its trio of seniors plus freshman DJ Pigford's game-high 20 points to end its 10-game losing streak.

With the win, the Tornados qualify for the American Southwest Tournament as the eighth seed, jumping over the Blazers in the conference standings.

Concordia Texas utilized the 3-ball all afternoon, finishing the game with a 42% mark from behind the arc. Phillips knocked down four of the team's 10 3-pointers, finishing the game with 16 points along with four boards.

Pigford, meanwhile, was doing it all for the Tornados, going 9-of-13 from the floor for a game-high 20 points, his fourth 20-point game of the season. Estrada also provided a spark from downtown, hitting three 3-pointers for the game and pouring in 15 points in his final game at home.

Defensively, CTX harassed BU, forcing 15 turnovers and turning them into 18 points on the other end.

In the first half, the Blazers built an early four-point lead, but it was as much as the Tornados would allow them, going in front for good on Pigford's layup to make it 8-6.

Concordia Texas hit seven 3-pointers in the opening half and closed out the period on a 13-4 run, heading to the locker room with a 53-34 advantage.

The Tornados did not let up in the second half, outscoring BU 43-28 and shot 63% from the floor alone.

Cameron Jones was a playmaker for CTX, dishing out a career-high seven assists and added four points off the bench.

Antoine Henderson had 10 of his 12 points in the second half and the Tornados ran away with a 96-62 victory, ending their losing skid and reaching the ASC Tournament for the eighth year in a row.

Concordia Texas will now prepare for the conference tournament, which will take place on the campus of number one seed Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton, Texas.

The Tornados will face the Cru in the nightcap game on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. inside the Mayborn Campus Center.
