BOX SCORE BELTON, Texas – The Concordia Texas men's basketball team shot 50% from behind the arc, led by
Sean Phillips' five 3-pointers, but came up short to No. 7 Mary Hardin-Baylor 87-82 in the quarterfinals of the American Southwest Conference Tournament on Thursday.
The Tornados entered into the tournament as the eighth seed, facing tournament host, the top-seeded Cru for their third matchup of the season.
Concordia Texas had four different players score in double figures, led by Gonzalez's 16-point performance. The Tornados whittled a 19-point second half deficit down to a tied game, but a late UMHB run proved to be the difference.
In the first half,
DJ Pigford led the offense for the Tornados, knocking down four 3-pointers and producing 12 points. The Cru opened the game with an 11-2 run, but CTX slowly chipped away, cutting it to 23-22 after Pigford's 3-pointer at the 8:59 mark.
The Tornados tied the game at 32-all after Pigford found
Donovan Stafford for a jumper in the paint, but UMHB closed the half on a 15-6 run and led 47-38 at the midway point.
Antoine Henderson was efficient for CTX in the first half, scoring eight points on six shots along with a pair of rebounds.
In the second half, the Cru widened their advantage, utilizing a 24-10 spurt to take their largest lead of the game at 71-52 with 11:34 to go.
The Tornados did not bow though as
Luis Gonzalez led a comeback.
The Carolina, Puerto Rico native scored all 16 of his points in the second half as CTX went on a 24-5 run, evening the game at 76-all after Stafford's putback layup. Phillips was also a key piece during the run, knocking down a pair of 3-pointers.
Mary Hardin-Baylor put together a late run once more, going back in front 85-78 with 2:10 to play.
Gonzalez hit two free-throws in the final minute to cut it to three, but were unable to even the score, falling 87-82.
Phillips finished with 15 points along with three assists, while Stafford had a near double-double, pouring in 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
The loss ends the Tornados' season, falling in the ASC Quarterfinals for the third year in a row.
Concordia Texas says goodbye to their three seniors,
Zaid Harris,
Alexander Estrada and Phillips, but will have key playmakers returning in Pigford, Stafford, Henderson and Gonzalez.
