LONGVIEW, Texas –
Natalie Velardez knocked down four 3-pointers, scoring a career-high 20 points, but it was not enough as the Concordia Texas women's basketball team's second half comeback fell short to LeTourneau 76-69 on Sunday inside Solheim Arena.
The Tornados returned to the court for the first time since Jan. 29 after having both their contests against the YellowJackets and UT Dallas delayed due to inclement weather in the state.
Velardez showed no rust on the court though, shooting 7-of-13 from the field, including a 3-of-7 mark from behind the arc, on her way to posting a career-high 20 points along with six rebounds.
Havyn Perez, meanwhile, grabbed a team-high eight boards, dished out five assists and went 5-of-5 from the free-throw line, finishing with 13 points on the day.
Concordia Texas were unable to stop LETU offensively in the first half as they jumped out to a 46-32 lead at halftime.
The Tornados began their comeback in the third, outscoring the YellowJackets 16-12.
Velardez hit a pair of 3-pointers in the quarter, while
Erin Toro and
Chelsea Cogborn each added four points as CTX pulled within 58-48 heading into the final period.
In the fourth, LETU opened on a 7-1 spurt, taking their largest lead of the game at 65-49.
The Tornados did not go away though, responding with a 12-0 run, including five points from Perez, cutting the deficit to a three-point game after
Allie Garza's free throw.
The YellowJackets answered, scoring 11 of the next 16 points and CTX was unable to mount another late comeback, falling 76-69.
Cogborn also finished in double figures for the Tornados, going 4-of-7 from the field for 10 points and pulled down five rebounds, while Toro poured in nine points on the day.
Concordia Texas will have a quick turnaround, traveling to Richardson, Texas to face UT Dallas on Monday at 5:30 p.m. inside the UTD Activity Center.
