Tornados second half comeback falls short to UT Dallas

RICHARDSON, Texas – Luis Gonzalez scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half, but it was not enough as the Concordia Texas men's basketball team was unable to complete the comeback, falling to UT Dallas 84-70 on Monday inside the UTD Activity Center.

The Tornados, who were playing the second game of a back-to-back road trip, showed no fatigue as three players scored in double figures, led by Gonzalez's team high 16 points.

In the first half, CTX was efficient offensively, shooting 52% from the floor and was led by Trevon Hester off the bench.

The North Richland Hills, Texas native had nine first-half points, including a 3-pointer sparking an 8-1 Tornados' run to make it a one-possession game midway through the half at 22-20.

Concordia Texas had eight different players score in the period, including six points from Antoine Henderson on 3-of-5 shooting, but were unable to slow down the Comets and trailed 37-33 heading into the locker room.

In the second half, Donovan Stafford hit a 3-pointer followed by a Gonzalez layup and the Tornados took their first lead of the game since the 15:37 mark in the first half.

Concordia Texas took their largest advantage of the game at 44-40 as DJ Pigford found Henderson for a layup. Pigford finished the game with a team-high five assists.

UT Dallas did not go away though, reeling off an 11-2 run to retake the lead.

Gonzalez knocked down his lone 3-pointer of the game at the 11:19 mark to pull the Tornados within two at 53-51.

It was as close as CTX would close the gap as the Comets pulled away once again with an 8-2 spurt and go on to defeat the Tornados 84-70.

Henderson finished the game with a near double-double for CTX, producing 12 points on nine shots and pulling down a team-high 8 rebounds. Meanwhile, Hester finished with 13 points and Stafford added 10 points and five rebounds in the loss.

The Tornados will remain on the road, traveling to Alpine, Texas for a conference matchup against Sul Ross State on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. inside the Gallego Center.
