Tornados fall to Trinity in non-conference contest

AUSTIN, Texas – The Concordia Texas baseball team hosted Trinity for a non-conference matchup, falling 15-5 at Tornado Field on Tuesday.
 
The Tornados mounted a comeback, providing a three-run seventh inning to cut into the TU lead, but the Tigers answered with a big eighth inning and sealed the game.
 
Shawn Huber had a stellar day at the plate, going 3-for-4 at the plate with a run scored, and Dalton Watts drove in two runs with a two-RBI double.
 
David Matthews turned in a solid start on the mound despite earning a loss, tossing three innings and allowing only one run on one hit, and Hayden Schroeder was solid in relief, throwing 1.1 shutout innings.
 
After a scoreless first inning, Huber opened the scoring, coming home on an RBI fielder's choice from Chris Varljen to give the Tornados a 1-0 lead with two innings played.
 
Trinity answered in the following frame, evening the score at 1-1 with an RBI groundout.
 
In the top of the fourth, Trinity plated six runs on seven hits to take a 7-1 lead.
 
Concordia Texas earned one run back in the bottom of the fifth after Varljen came home on a TU error. After five and a half innings, the Tornados trailed 7-2.
 
Trinity added another run in the following inning with a sac fly, extending the lead to 8-2.
 
In the bottom of the seventh, the Tornados closed the gap with a three-run inning. An RBI bunt single from Aaron Gomez brought home the first run, bringing Jordan Sydnor in to score, and Watts delivered a two-RBI double to score Gomez and Sterling Stephens. Heading into the eighth, the Tornados cut the lead to 8-5.
 
The Tigers sealed the game in the eighth inning, plating seven runs to extend the advantage to 15-5 and never look back. Ultimately, the Tornados fell 15-5 after nine innings.
 
Concordia Texas will look to bounce back this weekend, traveling to Longview, Texas for a three-game set with ASC foe LeTourneau. The series will begin at Friday with the opening contest at 7 p.m.
