Franz walks it off, Tornados split doubleheader

AUSTIN, Texas – Otto Franz led the way on the mound and at the plate in a series finale victory, and the Concordia Texas baseball team split the series finale with East Texas Baptist Friday.

In game two, the Tornados were unable to start the offense, losing 4-0, but game three ended with heroics as Franz peppered a walk-off single to right field to secure the 2-1 victory.

Franz tossed six shutout innings in game three, striking out seven along the way, and drove in both runs in the contest.

In game one, Michael Smith turned in a solid outing on the mound, pitching 6.1 innings and allowing only four runs with six strikeouts.

Mac Surles went 2-for-3 at the plate in the game, picking up two of CTX's three hits, and Kalen Moreno recorded the other.

The Tornados were unable to plate a run while ETBU added one in the second, one in the fourth, and put the game away with two in the seventh. Ultimately, CTX fell 4-0.

Riding Franz's performance on the mound in the game two, the Tornados broke through and scored a run in the fourth after Franz drove in Shawn Huber on a fielder's choice. Heading into the fifth, CTX took a 1-0 lead.

Migl replaced Franz on the mound in the seventh inning, and he earned his fourth win of the year with three innings of one-run baseball.

In the top of the ninth, ETBU tied the game 1-1 with a sacrifice fly.

Dalton Watts led off the bottom of the ninth with a single and stole second base, and Huber followed with an infield single. Next, Mason Dubois was intentionally walked, loading the bases, and Franz came up clutch with game-winning RBI single, securing the 2-1 win.

Taking a break from American Southwest Conference play, Concordia Texas will travel to San Antonio for a midweek showdown at Trinity at 6:30 p.m.
