Tornados postseason run ends with 9-5 loss to HSU

RICHARDSON, Texas – The Concordia Texas baseball team ended their season in an American Southwest Conference Tournament elimination game, falling 9-5 to Hardin-Simmons Saturday.
 
Hardin-Simmons took an early lead in the game, and the Tornados battled back but the Cowboys continued to pull away. Ultimately, CTX was unable to complete the comeback and fell 9-5.
 
Chris Varljen turned in a stellar performance at the plate, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs, and Kalen Moreno picked up a pair of hits and RBI. Mason Dubois also added two hits and scored two runs in the contest.
 
The Cowboys jumped out to an early first-inning lead, plating three runs on five hits in the opening frame to gain a 3-0 advantage.
 
Concordia Texas earned one run back in the following frame as Varljen singled home EJ Sanchez, cutting the lead to 3-1.
 
In the bottom of the second, HSU tacked on another run on a passed ball, pushing the lead to 4-1.
 
After a few quiet innings, an RBI single added on to the HSU total, bringing the score to 5-1 in the bottom of the fifth.
 
Varjlen picked up two more RBIs in the sixth inning, peppering a single up the middle and bringing Christian Padilla and Mason Dubois around to score. Heading into the bottom of the sixth, the Tornados cut the lead to 5-3.
 
In the bottom half of the inning, HSU worked an RBI walk and brought another run home on a sacrifice fly, extending the lead back to 7-3.
 
In the top of the eighth, Padilla delivered an RBI triple down the right field line, bringing Dubois around to score from first, and Moreno followed with an RBI single up the middle. After seven and a half innings, the score stood at 7-5.
 
Hardin-Simmons answered in the bottom half of the seventh, plating a pair of runs on a wild pitch and an RBI double. The Cowboys would take this lead the rest of the way, and the Tornados fell 9-5 in the elimination matchup.
